It doesn’t matter if you have been playing golf for decades or have just taken up a club, the greatest achievement for many golfers is breaking 80. Anyone can learn how to break 80. Golf can be taught, even to those who don’t have natural talent.
One of the biggest culprits to breaking 80 is your mental game. For so many players, just getting close seems to do something to their game. For others who cannot seem to even break 85 or 90, this may seem like a massive step up, but there are some easy and highly effective ways to improve your mental game and take your playing to the next level.
One of the most important steps to achieving your goals is to visualize them. Each shot must be played as an individual experience and each shot should be visualized from beginning to end. Take a deep breath before you tee off and place the ball in your mind where you want it to be. See its path and mentally send it to where you want it. The body responds to what the brain is thinking and often having a clear picture of exactly what you want to have happen will make it happen.
Of course there are other practical tips to breaking 80 and how are some of my best.
o Practice. Cliché but true. No sport is mastered by sitting on the sidelines, but practicing bad habits is not going to do you any good. If you don’t know how to cure your slice or cannot drive straight, then you need to find someone to help you. There is no point in practicing to do something incorrectly. If personal training is not an option, then watch other people and read as much material as you can on the topic and something will eventually ring true for you.
o For so many players, it’s the short game that lets them down. Putting and chipping is vital if you want to learn how to break 80. Again it is really important to visualize this part of your game and see the ball going into the hole, time after time.
o Equipment is not vital, but it will improve your game. A great player can play with any clubs, but a great player will always play a great game with great clubs. If you are comfortable with your set, then you are going to have a better game. Giving yourself the best possible chance of breaking 80 is not made any easier when you’re playing with clubs that you have no faith in.
Learning how to break 80 doesn’t always happen overnight, but if you have fun while playing then the enjoyment will be even more when you eventually do. Don’t get hung up about not cracking it as this just makes it harder. Remember that most of it is in your head and if you are tense, then your body won’t do what you want it to do, so relax and go out and have some fun.
